from my little experience on your tool... and seen that term classification is growing ... i would suggest that when a new term is created with taxonomy select, the module checks for synonims on the db (maybe with rules?).
as i say, i am learning i am going to investigate this.
if i am able to do a rule for this (first time i use rules) i will post it here.

i change the subject because after studing i have learn that what it suited more for my project was to use related terms.
i found a patch that helped to me to create parent-child relations

and i copy it and adapt for make related terms.
i submited there until fago or other expert makes it better but for this site, it is enough!!!
i am very happy to discover rules, thanks for the work! :)
