I got a message that cron had not run. I attempted to run it manually and got an error 'could not complete your query"

Yes so you have a couple of options. 1 is to set up a cron with whatever tool your host provider gives you. Or you can install poormanscron which is what alot of beginners use. It's not really important until the site is live that cron is running.

My site is now live and cron will not run even manually. I am not sure how to get it working. On the status report page it says cron has never been run and has a link to run cron manually but when I click the link all I get on a page is a message "could not complete your query"

When I schedule cron to run it still shows in my admin interface that it has not run. When I attempt to run cron manually, I get an error, please see attachment

I would check the error logs for the specific error message
