How to add ability for uploading manual or custom thumbnails?

Hey, I'm buildling a site that is using the media gallery I know the module is "rough", but ti's a good start and we're adding some custom code including a per user library filter (very cool). We'll share it when we're done. Right now I need the ability to add custom or manual thumbnails to add media fields? What do you think is the best approach to do this?
