I think it would be great if someone was willing to take the time to create a forum module that looks and feels like standard forums. The current state of Drupal forum is been very simplistic, and it would be nice if someone could take that and expand it to a nice interface. Additionally, this project should include a signature filter that allows signatures to be dynamic instead of static parts of comments/nodes

Out of scope

First, there are half a dozen third party forums that have been integrated at some level with Drupal. Have you tried those? Second, a rewrite of the forum module is completely out of scope for a 4-month college student project. Is there a specific feature or set of features that would enhance the forum module that might make a realistic project? Draw up a specific proposal for the features you think are needed. Thanks.

Ya your right. My thought process was, 'You know what I should really tackle'.

I am still a student ;)

Signatures issue
robertDouglass - February 15, 2007 - 07:49

Your point about the signatures is good, but there is an active issue for this already: http://drupal.org/node/10938

I can't see us assigning SoC projects to students that deal with such delicate issues. SoC projects have to be autonomous enough from core that their success can be judged on its own. Some exceptions have been made (Steven Wittens and Konstantin Kaefer both worked on core), but only when it is clear that what they are doing will be accepted and the path is agreed upon).

'new forum module' whining is ignorant of the Drupal philosophy and past community efforts.

http://groups.drupal.org/drubb is the place where the enhance Drupal forum capabilities the Drupal way happens.

If the proposal is not rewritten soon, I will simply remove it.
