The installation process of Content Access is very easy. Just download the suitable version for your Drupal core version, and enable it (How to Install a module in Drupal 7 and Drupal 6).

To work with Rules module, you have to install and enable Rules. Also, to enable per-user access permissions (e.g. Bob & John only can view this content type) you have to install and enable ACL.

After enabling Content Access a message will appear telling you that you need to rebuild your permissions. Do this immediately, otherwise no effects will be take place when changing access.

If you have users who can see the Access control tab, but not the content on the page, then try checking whether they have permission to View Administration Theme.
