If you create a subtheme, you must also copy all of the images in the img folder. I noticed that I was getting a lot of errors in my logs about images in the subtheme/img/icons folder not being found, until I copied all of the icons from the Marinelli base theme into that folder.
The documentation should specify somewhere that these images are not automatically inherited, and need to be manually copied.
