I'd like to know what the upgrade path for subthemes is from 1.7 to 2.0. Will an existing custom sub theme just continue to work with 2.0 or will I need to make changes to my themes? The theme I'm concerned about is the ngp theme collection.

At this point there is no upgrade-path per-se. The changes between 1.7 and 2.0 are fairly significant. Your theme will have to be updated to work with the new version.
