What is the correct way to delete media from the media library so that it does not appear in the media browser any more. I've deleted the media from the node, but the message "The file will still be available in the media library to use elsewhere on this site." I'm afraid to just delete the media files the old fashioned way as I'm not sure what type of database activity is going on surrounding these files. Any advice? Problem is that I'm duplicating a circus performer's website for an opera singer and all sorts of inappropriate pictures are showing up in the media browser.

You can go to admin/content/media and use the interface provided by the Media module to delete the item. As long as you've removed it from all places in which it's being used, it should allow you to delete it.

Hm, this question has come up several times. I wonder if it would be useful to change the message that appears (or link it to admin/content/media) to make it more clear how to delete the item completely.

One complication with this is that some lower-level users who have permission to remove the item from the gallery might not have permission to actually delete it from the site.

Thank you! This is exactly what I needed to know.

node/1/multiedit
Is unusable for deletion!

@workonwomen, that is a bug. I created a new issue for that: see #1391928: "remove media from a gallery"-checkbox is not shown in edit/multiedit form.
