Remove link from $nav_title in block?

This might be a date issue, apologies if so. When using a block, the month in the title provides a link to the current month. i do not wish for this to happen, rather it will jsut print the month with no link. I looked at date-naviagation.tpl.php which simpply prints $nav_title. Function is found in the .inc, how can i write a preprocess to remove the link but keep the month as text. Note , I still need prev and next links
