If I add a "None" to field spec, sometimes it appears, sometimes it does not, with respect to existing content with no tags.

This could mean a lot of different things. Views, cck, taxonomy etc.

Version:	6.x-2.9

is probably wrong.

Please read http://drupal.org/node/571990 and give some more informations so you could actually get some help.

Thanks, dereine. You're right - the views version is 6X-2.12.
Hopefully the two attachments will explain the situation. The first shows the setup. The second shows how blank values are displaying blanks rather than "[None]". Other rows, not shown in the picture, do show the word "[None]" when blank. Note that the view is OG aware, in case that make a difference.

Have you tried the -dev version?

Thanks very much for your response. I just tried the dev version and it did not change anything - some untagged records appear with the "[None]", and some are just a blank. Thanks again.
