I have raised this in various issues here and in the similar modules 'relation' and 'entity reference', trying to get a feel for a roadmap to the future, and where to potentially concentrate efforts to reduce the maintenance load across all these module.

As the entity reference and relation module is more and more focused, I think this can be less possible.
