Could Catalunya/Catalonia be added to the list of countries, please? In case you reject this, please do tell why. Thanks!

I guess we could add it as it qualifies as country in the sense of https://drupal.org/node/955312 (ie. we add everything).

Maybe we should convert it to a free text field where you can add several countries (or whatever) delimited by commas.

Yes, please, do add Catalunya to the list or either allow free text on the country field. Many catalan drupalists would be very happy with this.

Changing the priority to 'normal', as the issue was created 2.5 years ago but hasn't been addressed.

Oh yes, please.

Can you clarify where you want Catalonia added? Would this be on user profiles or elsewhere?

Pere Orga’s picture

Please can be added everywhere?

robertgarrigos’s picture

Everywhere, please! :-)

Yes, please. Would be great to choose our nationality, everywhere indeed :)

lizzjoy: it would be nice indeed if we could at the very least choose the right country we feel we belong to in our profile. That would be in accordance with this page defining countries on drupal.org, particularly:

[...] we support everyone's right to identify themselves in their own way [...]

I think the proposal in #1 makes sense. I don't want to hold back a simple task unnecessarily, but I also worry about where we stop if we add Catalunya.

I think we should follow what we do in Core #1068840: core/includes/standard.inc contains inaccurate country data

This is a very political issue. When I've run into this issue in the past.

The single page with the most comments on my blog is a text list of countries of the world.

Lots of controversy, opinions, concerns. I think the only way for the Drupal community to avoid this is to pick some standard of sovereign states and run with that.

I don't think Catalunya is yet.

Now I have no problem using autocomplete though and allowing folks to self-select. this is for the User profiles /user right?

I don't mind if folks list Catalunya as their country, no problem if they identify with Cascadia for that matter.

Yes of course is a political issue.
In these standard of sovereign states we can find «Palestinian Territory, Occupied» ...
I don't mean that Catalonia be the same case, but many people from this region of Spain aren't (we) comfortables choosing Spain as our country, because it isn't.
Hopefully we'll can vote and decide our destiny in near future, but I agree with you that by the moment our feeling, sadly, can not be considered «official».

Identity is an important thing... Can you open a new issue to seek that we use autocomplete to allow folks to self-select their country? I think that's more useful for the community than any geographic simplicity that can be gained by limiting the number of countries in a select list.

The label of the field is "Country" and not "Sovereign state". The term "country" may be used to refer to sovereign states, but may be not. No one is saying here that Catalonia is a sovereign state, as it does not currently have a sovereignty status, not even a disputed one.

See:

In my opinion, having a text field (with autocomplete) instead of a drop-down menu is not a good idea. To me it makes sense to have a moderated list of options. But I agree that this should be addressed in another ticket.

To me it makes sense to have a moderated list of options.

Can you clarify why that is? And can you clarify what criteria we should use to determine which countries to add to the list and which ones not to add?

IMO, the main benefit of the text field is that it eliminates questions like this one. Everyone who self-identifies as living in Catalonia could just enter that and wouldn't need to wait on a debate by webmasters who are likely not familiar with the political situation around the world.

Because some people may start writing things like 'Tomato Sauce'. You may be ok with that, but that is definitely another issue that should be addressed in another ticket.

Sorry I can't, apart from suggesting common sense. If there is a group of people who feel they are from a country which is not available in that list, for example. That country will probably be in that list too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_active_separatist_movements

Makes sense, but I wouldn't expect dozens of debates if they haven't happened already.

I am totally ok with people selecting "Tomato Sauce" as their country. It probably has a better government than most "real" countries.

So, +1 on a simple text field where people can put in as many "countries" as they like. Or whatever, really.
