Hi,
I want to use Calais for my next project to autotag music album reviews. First glances are impressive, but I have a question or 2:

Firstly, how does it deal with negatives?
EG if I type in "This is not another stoner metal album, but a carefully crafted reference to the future" into the Calais Viewer, the keyword "Stoner Metal Album" is picked up - which could obviously cause problems.

Secondly, does it deal only with entities such as cities and facts, or can it be used to pull adjectives from the content as well?

I want to use auto tagging to really pull the 'mood' from the content, but that may be tricky I guess.

Anyway, any pointers much apprecieated.

Thanks, Joe

OpenCalais uses the OpenCalais semantic tagging system from Thompson Reuters. It is pretty good at classifying content (especially news content) and denoting people, places, events, holidays and things of that nature. It will try to tell you about the subject of an article, but not really about its mood.

In terms of negatives, its fairly good at identifying things that you are actually talking about, and ignoring things that you aren't. However, you can select which terms you use, so if there are some issues, you can simply remove those terms.

Hope that helps, sorry for the delay.

Thanks Jec - it does help yes - although that particular project is on the back burner for a while. It's interesting to know a bit more about how Calais works.

Thanks, Joe
