This issue branches off from : http://drupal.org/node/1318454#comment-5158088,

this is a new ticket about the differences between notifications and subscriptions.

my question is:

I was wondering what the difference was between notifications and subscription and if it is not better to team up, since both modules are similar. I said that notifications was more developed, but im not sure about that since its also in development and it isnt quite working yet.

Just wondering because they both seem to be great modules, with a lot of potential. Subscriptions better on UI, Notifications maybe better in the infrastructure (no token hacks needed) - but i really dont have enough insight to judge about that.

There have been issues about this: http://drupal.org/node/225553 .last comment from over 2 years ago. So i decided to open a new thread about it.

I wrote this earlier to you(Salvis) a private email because i didnt want to throw it into the public, since these matters might be complicated, but indeed better in the open air.

Thank you for posting here, nuez. I like to discuss things openly.

Nothing has really changed since #225553: Notifications module. The comment #286789-38: Sending notifications based on a cck node reference field may provide some additional insight.

Notifications is a fork of Subscriptions, created for monetary reasons and because the person getting paid for his work was unable to fit into the existing team. Apparently, the income stream has stopped now and the future of Notifications is unclear. chx foresaw this four years ago in #214580-1: Fuse with notifications module. That's about all I know about Notifications, and I don't have the time or interest to do any further investigations. There's some information at http://groups.drupal.org/node/15928. Anyone who has more is welcome to post it there or here.

I started working on Subscriptions because I need it for my own sites, and I will continue to do so. If anyone wants to contribute code, you are certainly welcome to post patches. I'm also very grateful for all kinds of feedback, especially from serious testing — this will a great help moving forward.

(As far as the "token hack" is concerned, it would make sense and benefit the entire community to integrate that functionality into Token, and if we could get some support in #1195874-18: Need to figure out how to create nested tokens from the array token type, we might make everybody happy, but it can also be implemented outside of Token, too. This shows that I'm willing to collaborate when it makes sense, but I'll follow my own path when it doesn't work out. Please open a separate issue if you want to further discuss the "token hack.")

thx salvis for this explanation and your efforts to provide a good subscriptions module, which is crucial for community websites. had a lot of hassle to check out which one to use.
