It's a good idea to use the function "Save for web" in Photoshop or Gimp to get a small image size. Use PNG 8 and a 256 color palette.

The screenshot was made with the internal MacOS screenshot program at work. I wasn't aware it was so wasteful. This screenshot would have been made with Photoshop (and save for web) if I were on my PC. I'll update it the screenshot.
