This is great... but ideally I'd like to be able to use the facets to narrow down *all* the content, not that which has already been narrowed by the text search. Is there any "all" command which could be used - eg /search/content/all - which could bring up the page showing all the content, with the facet blocks displayed?

Respectfully marking as won't fix because this is a limitation of the core search module. In order to get around this we would have to override a lot of code, which I have no interest in doing. If you want more advanced search functionality, consider upgrading to Apache Solr Search Integration or Search API.
