node reference field

I would like to hide a check box field(field_current) only if a node reference field (field_name) widget: reference from URL, is filled.
I've set up the dependency field_current is invisible when field_name is filled, but it doesn't do anything.
I'm using panels so I could write a custom php code but I don't know how to.
Any help would be really appreciated.
