The Avatar Selection module can be configured at Administer >> Site Configuration >> Avatar Selection. Users will need the 'administer avatar selection' permission to alter the settings and to upload or delete images.

  • How many avatars per page - The number of avatars to show per page. This affects both the user profile edit page and the manage avatars configuration form.
  • Disable users uploading pictures to profile - This allows users to pick their avatar image from the selection provided by this module but prevents them from uploading new avatars when editing their account.
  • Force users to select an avatar image on user registration - This only applies on the user registration screen.
  • Force users to select an avatar image when editing their account - This only applies when the user is editing their account details and image uploads are disabled.
  • Enable random default avatar image - Automatically set a random avatar image to be used when the user doesn't set one for their account.
  • Enable unique avatars - Only allow users to pick an avatar that isn't already in use by another user. If there are no available avatars left, the default avatar image will be used.

Uploading New Avatars

To upload a new avatar, go to admin/settings/avatar_selection/upload. Here you can upload an avatar from your local machine or you can force a scan of the avatar_selection directory to bulk upload new avatars that have been copied to the server via ftp or some other method. Selecting the "Scan Avatars" option will perform the bulk upload, but it will also perform a bulk delete of all entries for which there are no corresponding files.

For each avatar upload, you can specify which user roles or organic groups (if enabled) should have access to them. If no role is specified then the avatar will be available to all users, regardless of their role settings. In addition you can assign the avatar a name and a weight. The name will be used as the image alternative text and will appear when the mouse hovers over the image. The weight is used when sorting the list. Avatars with a lower weight appear before higher weighted avatars in lists.

Managing Avatars

To modify or delete an existing avatar, go to admin/settings/avatar_selection/edit where a summary of the number of avatars per role and organic group is shown. Clicking on the 'edit' link for an individual role or group will allow to view the list of avatars for that role/group. You can edit an avatar by clicking on it and then pressing the "edit" button. You will then be able to modify the avatar name and weight, along with the role and organic group settings for the avatar, or delete it if necessary.
