We really need either patches for custom modules or new releases of custom modules that make any necessary database changes for changed views, new product fields, etc. It's not practical to download the entire distribution and reinstall or pore through code to see how a view or product has changed every time a bug is fixed.

What you describe is a Drupal distributions flaw. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to update distributions.
