Hi,

"Views integration....the 7.x version simply requires Views 7.x-3.x"
I've wondering that is there really a Views integration or is it just some kind of API? At least the README file suggest that is would be just an API with those coding examples.

I've never managed to get any chart with Views. At least there is chance to choose 'Chart' and it is calling(sometimes) Google Chart API, but usually image is broken or it has one label and line but nothing else.

I know that there's already a chart for presenting site's content, but just for the learning curve, I'd like to make one with this. So far it seems impossible. Any suggestions? 4 260 7.x sites using, so I believe that it should do the work but how?

I also can't get any proper graphs. Using Views 7.x-3.3 and Google Chart API 7.x-1.1. I get random unpredictable plots, or just a few points in the corner - maybe the scale is off? Part of my problem may be I don't know how this works.. do I just pick 2 fields in my view for a 2 axis graph? Is sorting used at all?

From what I can tell there is no working views integration in this module. Also, it is listed as 'minimally maintained' so I am not hopeful.

Some examples would be nice. :)

According to http://blog.amazeelabs.com/en/create-ultimate-google-analytics-dashboard...

Unfortunately, the Google Analytics Views module does not still support the “Chart” format, so you have to use the Views Dataviz module. After the installation, there is a new “Dataviz” format in Views, which you can use to create the charts.

The Views Dataviz module doesnt support strings at this moment, only numeric values allowed. So if you try to show strings like "1366x768 " (Browser resolution) it won't work.

Title: Views integration or not? » Views integration or API?
Issue summary: View changes
Related issues: +#1498348: Example broken in README.txt file, +#2370851: Create community docu for chart, +#2369883: Create chart documentation

Sorry this issue has taken so long for somebody to get back with an attempt to answer ... As a new co-maintainer here is a first attempt to do so ...

@jAYBOB: checkout the video mentioned in this issue. After you did so: does it answer the questions you asked? Also note that the 4260 nr you mentioned is now over 20K ... What I personally really don't get (as a new maintainer): what is the impact of the 2015 deadline mentioned on the project page?

I recently created issues like #1498348: Example broken in README.txt file, #2370851: Create community docu for chart and #2369883: Create chart documentation. Assuming those issues get addressed, would you agree that we would address the spirit of what you tried to report in the original issue here (and where appropriate continue these items in those issues)?

About #1: if still valid, what about the most recent DEV version? If you re-verify and still run in any similar issues that are NOT duplicates of other open issues, please created a NEW issue with details about how to recreate such issues. From there we have something to continue working on. In other words: don't expect a solution without somebody being able to reproduce the problem, makes sense? With that I hope it's OK to not further consider #1 as part of needs to be addressed in "this" issue, Deal?

About #3: you ARE right, so thanks for (indirectly) supporting my new issues (related to this issue now). I look forward to whatever contributions to those issues from whomever ... Though while digging in the chart issue queue and available docu, I've NOT found a lot in that area ...

About #2: you WERE right up until #2368793: Chart 2.0 received status fixed about a week ago. Have you seen my proposals in #2371567: Chart 6.x-2.x Release and #2371075: Chart 7.x-2.x Release? If so consider adding some type of thumbs up in those issues ... But keep in mind that there is still the April 2015 deadline to be resolved for over 25K sites. So any help is appreciated!

About #4: thank you, THAT is how we can make progress. Any other feedback about the needs review issues would lead to even more progress ...

About #5: the blog-link is broken, any other link where it might be moved to? Thanks for mentioning the Views Dataviz module. I wasn"t aware of that one yet, but I've added it now to the Comparison of Charting modules I created recently.

About the quote you mentioned: I'm not sure what you tried to communicate with it in the context of this issue, please try again, and include the link to the google analytics views module also (just a quick search on D.O within the modules didn't include such link). However, while I was just researching a bit this google analytics stuff, in the contxt of charting, I noticed that:

  • Google analytics module is used in over 375K sites, and has a related module Google Analytics Reports that provides GRAPHICAL reporting.
  • Google Analytics Reports however has a module dependency to ... the chart module !!!
  • So a module used in over 375K sites, has a RELATED module, which DEPENDS on chart. And the chart module today faces the April 2015 deadline imposed by ... Google ... What am I missing here to understand why hardly anybody is doing anything to get chart (back) in better shape? And what are the options for Google analytics users to "migrate" from chart to charts?

Apart from all these (scary?) observations, the views dataviz module seems to me like fairly young (not mature yet?), only D7, at best an alfa version, and with last commits from quite some time ago. Is that really the only option for the Google Analytics Views module?

Maybe somebody needs to start talking to either Dries or George (the one in his keynote in Drupalcon 2014 in Amsterdam) ... and urgently! Subject = 'Reporting & Charting Initiative', aka RCI ... If anybody does, let them know I might be interested in joining that party ...

About #6: interesting to know that also, it seems to confirm my perception about it also (as I wrote in my prior comment).

Status: Active » Postponed (maintainer needs more info)

Voilà, note the status update now. Curious to know how this issue is going to evolve. But to be honest "I" don't think there is anything more I can do about this issue unless the requested feedback in my previous comments is provided. I'll give it some time, but I don't plan to let this issue sit for another few years inn its current status.

@Pierre.Vriens - I tweeted Amazee Labs and they fixed the blog post link in mentioned in #5. Here's an updated one: Create the Ultimate Google Analytics Dashboard for Drupal — Part 3

Pierre.Vriens’s picture

+1 for the corrected link, merci! (oeps: thank you!). Anybody any other video link suggestions, please let us know, eg via this issue.

Pierre.Vriens’s picture

Some updates regarding #15:

  1. The links on that page to part 1 and part 2 are correct, but on part 1 the link to part 2 doesn't work ...
  2. What is written on part 3 is (still) wrong, because GA Reports depends on Chart, not on Views DataViz ... or am I missing something?
  3. The link to the community docu near the bottom of part 3 points to community docu of the GA reports module, while it says it is the community docu of the Chart module ... Moreover, I recently moved those 'some code samples' to Chart API Examples. I suggest replacing that specific link by the (brand new) Using the Chart API page I created recently.

Maybe another tweet from BrightBold containing a link to this comment I'm adding here might help?

PS: Feedback about the new community docu for Chart (work in progress!) would be appreciated. Same for contributions to it.
