So ACE Code editor is a very neat, very smart source code editor that could be integrated into JS-Injector to replace the plain text-area and allow for really powerful js editing from the js-injector interface itself.

This would send this module over the top!

Moving to 7.x-2.x.

Looking at the https://drupal.org/project/ace_editor module, does there even need to be any changes to the js_injector module?

Is there is, I am happy to review patches that allow this as (an optional) enhancement

There is also editarea which can be used with Custom Formatters module (see EditArea - Real-time syntax highlighting chapter).
