This module does indeed needs a little bit of exploring to figure out what's going on and how to use it.

I have attached the first version of a how-to/explanation.

In my case, from a fresh install, must allow user permission to
1. Access checkout
2. Create Payment

Very helpful readme!

I did need to allow the customer role to access checkout but not to create payment.

This README helped me to get the module working. This should appear on the main drupal.org/project/commerce_node_checkout page, as the documentation there is lacking/confusing.

This is definitely needed for both modules and for the project page. There have been a lot of changes since this helpful contribution. I'll try to put it all together asap.
