If you do not type in a valid email address during login, the following message appears:
"Sorry, unrecognized username or password. Have you forgotten your password?"

This should probably say "unrecognized email address," since the username field has been re-titled "Email."

That message comes from core and might be hard to override with this module directly.

The http://drupal.org/project/stringoverrides module could be a way to get this done.
