Layer weight for BaseLayers

It is possible to sort overlay layers by weight.

Can be this feature cloned for base layers too?
I think it's the only way to sort Layer Switcher in arbitrary order.

I tried to use weight in custom layer plugin (an extension of WMS layer) but it seems to be ignored.
