Is there a way for a nodereference to become a plain text field if a node does not exist, and I don't wish to add a new one.

If a non-existent node is specified, there are modules to create one eg.: "Node reference auto-create", and "Node Reference Create", and "Autocreate Node Reference".
But is there a way to "ignore" the error message, and allow the text of a non-existent node?
