That is actually OK for internal functions not to have a lot of documentation... They at least all have summary lines (or should once the API docs cleanup issues are done).
Not even a list of their parameters? I was writing a field widget module and trying to piggyback on some of option module's stuff and it was rather hard to figure out...
Also, what about maintainability? If there's no docs, I hope we have a contributor who remembers how it all works and keeps away from busy roads ;)

Functions starting with an underscore *are* private. Don't use them if you don't want to risk your code from suddenly breaking.
