"this also highly depends on the UX of it, eg. talking about Gettext PO files is simpler for users instead of just Gettext or just PO, however, repeating that in the docs all the time and especially in API function names is painful"

Naming things consistently in core code and comments will always be wonderful. Definitely not a top priority at the moment, but anyone can work on this if desired.
