striping based on Taxonomy doesn't work with relationship

It is possible to use a taxonomy field in the view that will be used to define the colors to use. It is working great.
However, I noticed that the taxonomy field has to be part of the view "directly". If the taxonomy field is coming to the view from a relationship, then it is not recognized by the module.
Has someone found a patch to that?
