micheWow! I have never seen an error like that before.... But I don't think you did anything wrong.
Because NodeMaker and all of its Apps are still in dev, the code available for download is a nightly snapshot of code we wrote the day before. It makes no promises of being stable or having an upgrade path.
If you are playing with NodeMaker now, I do encourage you to update regularly (once a week?) because new code has new features and bugfixes. However, you probably should not use Drupal's built-in 'click to update'. I recommend, removing all Drupal files EXCEPT for your "sites" directory, and then plopping in a new download of NodeMaker. @see http://drupal.org/node/1494290

hildesheim CreditAttribution: hildesheim commentedHi Michelle, Thanks will do. I really like NodeMaker and want to use it for our new website (currently D6) but would like to go 'live' sooner than later. Promise won't hold you to it but best questimate of stable release?

jaskru CreditAttribution: jaskru commentedI also had this issue-error, no .info file. Will follow your advice Michelle. I will be utilizing nodemaker in a live site that will be launching around your beta timeline. Hot on your heels. Thanks for all of this. Wish it was easier to update nodemaker. I have been tromping around the .make and .inc so I will do some digging.
