I've searched and read all day... and can't find the answers to a few questions. I'm not a techie. So please take it easy on me. Maybe others have simple questions that could also go in this thread.
1) What causes the replies/comments to get indented at drupal.org? Is this a configuration option? Or, is it in the theme? If it's in the theme, is it easy to turn on? I really like it.
2) I want to create a personal site that is mostly a blog, with other content management capabilities. Comments are obviously there. I think I see solid spam blocking. There seems to be trackback & pingback capabilities. Is there anything else I am missing that would rule Drupal out as a blog tool?

Indentation
Indentation is a theme function. There are good themes out there now that provide this. Try Friends Electric and SpreadFireFox.

Not a theme thing...
Threaded comments are more of a comment.module thing, not a theme thing. Themes could break it or make it look better, but generally every theme I've used does it without problem and the themes I've written have not required me to do anything special.
So, to configure whether your want you comments threaded (indented) or not go to administer->comments->configure. Scroll down to find the section that dictates how comments are displayed.
To answer your second question - yes, drupal is perfect for a blog site. :)

configuring comments
I tried your recommendation at the demo at http://www.opensourcecms.com. I went to admin -> administer -> comments -> configure and I find several options for how I would like the threads to show...
However, I don't see any options that offer the ability to indent comments.
Comments are automatically
Comments are automatically indented. If you "reply" to a particular comment, it will be indented from the parent comment.
All themes that I know of automatically indent comments like this.
Threaded
As I said - threaded view is what causes the indentation. So, turn on "Threaded list - expanded". If you instead do one of the "Flat list" views then the comments will not be indented.

thank you
Thank you.... you said you said it... but I'm not sure you said that before... but you did now :-) It helps quite a bit. This would have been a mystery otherwise.
I stand corrected
Aran
Thanks for correcting me on this.
