Joomla has menu images as an option when creating a new menu item. It would be great if Drupal had this built in as well. Many sites use images as menu items, as well as images (icons) along side of text for the menu items. There are also JavaScript effects many use such as mouseover and highlight of text as the mouse pointer goes over the menu items.

This would help so many as they convert their static sites over to Drupal CMS, because so many site builders use these effects. It would also encourage the spread of Drupal as it would encourage easier customization of themes if this functionality were built into the core of Drupal.

iconizer.module may be worth investigating.

I believe it can be done with some short .css as well. As far as it getting into the core themeing layer, one would have to construct a patch and work it into Drupal 7 as Drupal 6 is in code/feature freeze.
