trouble reverting Features module from some to no conditional fields

once a Features module containing at least one conditional field entry for a content type is enabled, you can't then remove that conditional field by reverting the Features module. because the hook in the Feature just returns an empty array, and the revert/rebuild function in CF takes no action if the array is empty.
