In my D8 development setup, I have a directory structure like this:
_realcore is a git submodule containing core. The symlinks shown are all point to the same file in _realcore. Everything seems to work fine, except that install.php hardcodes '..
' as the Drupal Root. However, because core/install.php is really _realcore/core/install.php, install.php tries to find _realcore/sites/default/settings.php, when it should be looking for sites/default/settings.php. My solution is currently to change install.php whenever I need to install, and change it back afterwards. I think there should be a better solution though…
This might be a duplicate of #363013: Drupal 7 Breaks Symlink Use.
