Our site was created using Drupal. We are looking to expand our offerings and create a community. We are seeking some more information on how this can be done. Are certain modules that are essential,what are the biggest concerns as we start planning.

investigate and joing the social community group over at groups.drupal.org

ultimatley the decision comes down to what features you want to offer your users. Keep in mind that the more modules you use, that your users use the more resources you will be required to run your site/server.
