The Multilingual Guide (http://drupal.org/documentation/multilingual) will need to be updated for Drupal 8.

As part of the update we should also move any procedural information off the landing page for that guide and into a child page(s). In other words, the landing page should just be a brief overview of managing multilingual content in Drupal, ideally without any (or much) reference to specific versions or to specific procedures.

More information on the multilingual initiative is available here: http://www.drupal8multilingual.org/

Should the guide have subsections for different versions? Some things in Drupal 8 are getting in shape pretty well but others are still moving parts (config translation and property translation stuff).

I don't know enough about the differences between multilingualism in the different versions but as a general rule, if the differences are relatively minor it's better to keep everything in one place and just note the differences in the text. This often is a good tradeoff if there's a lot of generic or common content (since it's not usually a good idea to fork content and we currently lack a method for displaying a single chunk of d.o. content in two locations)

However, if there are significant changes in the workflow and/or UI we should have separate sections for different versions.

The Drupal 6 and 7 core behaviour is pretty much the same. The Drupal 8 core behaviour is very different in many ways.

In that case, we'll definitely need to create one section for D6/7 content and another for D8.

@LeeHunter I'm happy to work on this. I'm sprinting with Gábor et al today and tomorrow. Like he mentioned, Drupal 8 is quite different. Let me know how you'd like me to proceed and I can set up the structure so we can start filling out the details. Thanks!

I've added a page to start a new subsection called Configuring multilingual sites for Drupal 8. I'm in transit to Portland so I don't have time to look at the content in detail but you might need to create a similar section for "... Drupal 7 and earlier". If any content is common to both, it should be kept as child pages of the main multilingual landing page (i.e. avoid duplicating content).

Hope that helps.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Changed my mind and deleted the d8 page I created yesterday. I like it better the way it was with the main multilingual landing page and then two main sections underneath, one for interface and one for content. In those sections we can break out d8 content separately where needed.

I've done a fair amount of cleanup on the guide and did a major rewrite of the main landing page (reducing it substantially). No progress on adding the actual D8 content but it might be a little easier to work with.

Issue summary: View changes

We need to revive this issue.

I think that keeping the current structure and adding documentation for Drupal 8 is probably a good idea.

I do think we need a new section on installing the site and modules, separated out by version. Maybe the current sections on contrib and core modules should be put under that, and labeled as Drupal 7 and earlier, because in Drupal 8 I think you pretty much just need Drupal Core, and the installation is quite different. I might see about this reorganization in the next few days.

Also, for Drupal 8 in general and the differences between 8 and previous Drupals, see Gabor's excellent series of posts: http://hojtsy.hu/multilingual-drupal8

OK, I've made a few updates:

- When you go to Multilingual, there is a new section (at the top of the outline) called Installing Site and Choosing Modules for Multilingual
- That has two sub-sections, one for Drupal 7 and earlier (which was originally titled "Contributed modules for internationalization"), and one for Drupal 8, plus a Drupal 7 cookbook.
- I edited a few other pages to clarify some Drupal 8 concepts. Much of the documentation is way out of date and some of it is blatantly incorrect by today's Drupal 8 standards.
