So I was working on a node and my browser crashed -- where is the auto-saved version exactly?

your data is saved on a per url (and uid) basis. so if you were editing node 45 then if you go to node/45 there should be a popup at bottom of the screen telling you there is an autosaved version. if you were creating a new node at node/add/mytype then when you go to add another one it will show the popup.

my guess would be you have not enabled AS for your node type

Where exactly do I do that?

There's nothing in the Auto Save settings to do that (http://www.sitename/admin/settings/autosave)?

try under settings for your node type.. :)
