Meanwhile, I changed the the input format for story content to "Full HTML", inserted a syntactically correct statement, but nevertheless, the image doesn't show up, regardless of having it listed in the upload section or not! Are there still any less obvious,l somewhat "hidden" option settings which I didn't take into account yet?

can you post a url where we
can you post a url where we can see it not working?
Unfortunately not, as I run Drupal only on a local Apache!
...but I suspect that is has something to do with the adressing of the image! Displayed in the upload menu, I see such strange URLs like
http://localhost/drupal-5.3/d:\xampp\htdocs\drupaltut_data/warrah2_0.jpg - could it be that getting rid of that would solve the problem?

This might be a configuration issue
I think that you are correct on the problem being with the URL of the image. The settings for the image upload and files should be relative to htdocs directory. instead of http://localhost/drupal-5.3/d:\xampp\htdocs\files have /files and /upload.
I had the same issue with my xampp setup.

Configuration?
And where would I have to configure this to get it right?
