I found it strange, but there is no classes describes the current state of controls.
So if I'm on the first slide, then previous control button should have "inactive" class (or loose default "active" class). Now I even can't theme the state of controls.

By default the slideshow is set up as a loop ie last is before first. If still an issue please re-open.
