First off, I realize there have been multiple threads on this such as this one; http://drupal.org/node/1411830.

I have tried to follow this but I could not get it to work.

What I did and would like to do is as follows:

I shrunk the main slideshow to about 1/2 the page and want to add a block on the other side of the slideshow to insert an image.

I attached a file to show what I am trying to explain. So, where the image is of the guy, I would like to create a block. Would this be possible?

HI,

Yes you can add block for specific part of home page.

Just you have to do create regions where you want to place your block in .info file.

After that print same regions in page--front.tpl.php/page.tpl.php which was you just created.

Create custom block place where your regions print and style as you want.
