My company is currently creating a business plan to launch an online social networking site. We are evaluating web developers from sites all over the world like elance.com and odesk.com, as well as looking at several domestic developers. As we continue in this process there is a huge spectrum of developers out there. Looking to narrow this list down, we are wondering whether it is in our best interest to have a developer write the social networking code from scratch, or to hire a developer that can apply an open source code. Within that is the question of whether Joomla or Drupal is a better open source question.

Can anyone please comment on the above. That would be very helpful.

Also, does anyone have any references to social networking sites that have been developed using Drupal or Joomla? Thanks a lot.
