I just generated a waterfall of the front page of Drupal.org for an example, and noticed that search-btn.png is using the same styling as https://drupal.org/sites/all/themes/bluecheese/images/sprites.png (and indeed Get started with Drupal etc. use those for background), but it's a standalone button image. This could be styled using CSS instead of an image button or whatever it is currently to save the extra HTTP request.

The search button is now pure CSS, not a sprite. This was likely changed during the D7 upgrade.
