The current admin menu is a relic from the Drupal 6 days, and in my opinion the default Drupal 7 menu is more usable. Thoughts?

Agreed. We've reverted this to use the standard Drupal 7 admin menu and will be making further improvements as well.

It looks like admin_menu was re-added along with module updates shortly after this was closed:

This issue was opened in reference to the old admin menu that displayed in the left sidebar. The admin_menu module now added enabled the menu with a dropdown structure, which was added intentionally. Closing.

I will be honest and say that although I did enjoy taking this menu, the only bad thing I can say is that it does not carry the overall punch I was looking for in a pre-workout drink when I would do power lifting.
