You can just load the font awesome CSS on your site using any acceptable Drupal method of doing so...

  1. Provides integration with other modules like the Icon API.
  2. Not every theme is designed to be easily modified.
  3. Not every developer is knowledgable in how to include CSS in a theme.
  4. Some people do not understand all the "acceptable Drupal methods" there are.
  5. Some people are confused by which "acceptable Drupal method" to use.
  6. Some people understand the simpler concept of "This module does X for me, great... install...".
  7. Some people may not need this module though. If so, don't use it... by all means, use a custom implementation to provide the same feature.
