The national Danish church is faced with many new challenges as the world is becoming increasingly digital. How do you combine traditional and spiritual values with today's needs for highpaced communication and multi-device communication? The Church of Copenhagen approached us with the explicit desire to make their new website more modern, minimalistic and magazine-like, and look less like something from an old book of hymns. They wanted their digital presence and visual profile to match the modern nature of their content: news, blogs and columns on spiritual, philosphical and ethical topics by some of Denmark's leading thinkers and academics.

Kirken I København / Church of Copenhagen won a 2013 Blue Drop Award for Best Best Religion and Spirituality Website Built With Drupal.

Why Drupal was chosen:

Drupal is a powerful and flexible framework. In particular we needed our site to be configured to interact with other technologies.

Describe the project (goals, requirements and outcome):

One of the important features for the Church was to be able to have a flexible framework throughout the site that would adapt to different types of subpages - from the Bishop's page to information about the Church organisation. With the use of Panels we were able to create this flexibility, and allow editors of the site to drag and drop elements and menus around on each subpages to customize them.

Apart from articles written in the CMS, the site also receives content from other Christian institutions: a feed with events from the official Church calendar as well as a feed from the Danish Ministry for Ecclesiastical Affairs with information about all the 113 churches in the diocese of Copenhagen.

Finally, in order to truly demonstrate itself as modern Church of the digital age - the site was made entirely responsive:
The site features responsive Primary and Secondary menus. In this case we felt that the typographical/design hierarchy of certain menu items needed to change depending on the device context. For example we considered that the 'Contact Us' menu item should have more hierarchy on a mobile phone (than on a desktop computer for example).

We used a combination of CSS and JQuery to refactor the menu design and typographical hierarchy across the range of target devices.
