When adding comments to a node, the server throws a 403 error when any of the Spam filters are enabled. Looks like the root cause of this is a conflict with the ajax_comments module. When it's un-installed, then the spam filter throws it's usual "Your posting was blocked by our spam filter" error page. That in itself is a problem as (a) the comments are quite benign and (b) the filters are set to be pretty permissive (but perhaps not permissive enough.)
