on my test site I'm not using tags in particular content types. For 2 reasons, 1. I don't feel like and 2. I keep getting errors when I do :(

Would that be reasonable to use, for example: title field as a keyword reference?

But you don't have to use tags! Just configure any field on your content type edit page inside the tab "Seo Compliance Checker".
