Hi,
there are a number of steps required to get search_api_solr working. Some of that in Drupal, some of it in solr.

It would be very useful to report about existing problems with this configuration in admin/reports/status, or on the configuration pages for a solr server.
I imagine I am not the only one who didn't get it right immediately :)

drunken monkeyPlease note that there is also extensive documentation in the Drupal.org handbook.
However, your idea makes sense, would be great to somehow report progress from inside of Drupal. It's just not that easy to implement, I think. In any case, I sadly currently lack the time for such improvements. I'm all for adding this, though, if someone else would provide a patch.
