While talking with bojhan and other UX people at drupalcon, removing the overlay is not possible unless we have an alternative interaction addressing the same issue.
Here it is. It's beautiful. Dropping the patch for people to try out. Still NW but putting NR for attention.
Visit a non-admin page. Then go to any admin page and notice the new "Back to site" link next to the title. Voila!

ksenzeeI said I wasn't going to work on any overlay- or JS-related patches this cycle, but the serious lack of documentation here convinced me otherwise.
