Duplicate functionality maybe, but both modules come at the solution in different ways:

Views Fluidgrid enables Masonry layouts for views (and only views) and bundles the Masonry plugin with the module.

Masonry Views is part of the overall Masonry project which enables Masonry layouts for lots of different parts of a Drupal site (such as fields, views and search results). You can also use Masonry as an API and write your own integration.

If anything were to happen with merging these modules due to their duplicate functionality, I'd suggest Masonry Views staying as the main module and any additional functionality from Views Fluidgrid being merged into it - due to the extensive nature of the Masonry project as a whole.
However, as I'm currently looking for a new maintainer for Masonry, this is something that needs to be discussed with whoever takes over.
