one more thing, I'm as much, or perhaps even more, interested in d8 as rest client

I'd like to be able to use the Hbase REST interface and bring that into Drupal, perhaps via Lily (which I haven't used)

I was looking at Remote Entity API for D7 but since my project is purely personal and speculative I thought about jumping a few steps and diving straight into d8

anyway, will get your distro cranking and see what I can do

Yeah, I'd definitely go D8 from the start. D7 has some ok tools, but nothing like what we have in 8 for creating and consuming web services. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. : )
